As the 2025 license renewal period approaches, Maryland social workers must ensure they meet all continuing education (CE) requirements, including a newly added requirement. To help you stay compliant, we’ve outlined all the necessary CE requirements and how you can fulfill them efficiently.
Maryland Social Work CE Requirements
Maryland social workers must complete a total of 40 CE hours (30 for LBSW) during each two-year renewal period. These hours must be distributed as follows:
At least 20 CE hours must be Category I credits (see below for details).
Up to 20 CE hours may be Category II credits (or all 40 may be earned through Category I).
Special Topic CE Requirements (Count Toward Total Hours)
3.0 CE Hours in Anti-Oppressive Social Work (Category I Only) – NEW
3.0 CE Hours in Ethics (Category I or II)
3.0 CE Hours in Supervision (Category I or II, only required for Board-Approved Supervisors)
Understanding Category I vs. Category II CE Hours
Category I CE hours are live, real-time interactive trainings between presenters and attendees, including face-to-face or interactive online sessions. These must be provided by Board Authorized Sponsors.
Category II CE hours are self-study trainings or other non-interactive activities.
For a deeper understanding of the distinction, check out our detailed article on Category I vs. Category II CEUs for Maryland Social Workers.
New Requirement: 3.0 Category I CE Hours in Anti-Oppressive Social Work

The regulation specifies that this content must focus on race, culture, or equity and include at least one of the following topics:
